We are delighted to offer a PhD Studentship in the Department of Social Sciences at Oxford Brookes University on ‘The implications of China’s Belt and Road initiative in developing sustainable communities in Central Asia.’  The supervisory team will consist of Dr Rico Isaacs, Dr Sarah Whitmore, (both Politics and International Relations) and Dr Ingrid A. Medby (Political Geography).

This PhD is designed to be inter-disciplinary across Politics, International Relations, and Geography. It will explore macro-issues related to China’s Belt and Road (BR) through the prism of local, non-Sino, perspectives.  It will also examine BR via the perspectives of different stakeholders involved on the ground in recipient states.

We welcome proposals on any single Central Asian case or a study which examines the impact of BR on the region comparatively. The topic is broadly conceived but could seek to explore the issue of BR in Central Asia in three potential ways, including (but not confined to):
- the production of space - in terms of how it is changing local perspectives on identities, borders and sovereignty.
- local governance and policy, especially how injections of BR and finance impact and influence local community governance in project sites in the region.
- different forms of risk and security in the region including: economic, environmental, political and community.
