CONFERENCE THEME
MinD invites papers and design contributions for the first international
MinD conference 2019 on Designing for People with Dementia.
The conference will provide a trans-disciplinary forum for researchers,
practitioners, end-users and policy makers from the design and health
care professions to exchange and discuss new findings, approaches and
methods for using design to improve dementia care and to support people
with dementia and their carers.
With ca. 10.9 million people affected by dementia in Europe, with
numbers set to double by 2050 (Prince, Guerchet and Prina 2013), with 20
million carers, and with no cure in sight, research into care to improve
the quality of life of people with dementia is essential, to encourage
and enable them to engage in activities that are in line with their
interests and experiences (Alcove 2013; Alzheimers Society 2013).
Characterised by progressive memory and cognitive degeneration, people
who are affected by Alzheimers disease or other dementias often face
cognitive, behavioural and psychosocial difficulties, including
impairment and degeneration of memory and of perceptions of identity
(Alcove 2013). As a result, many have reduced physical activities or
social engagement, or are unable to work. Emotionally, this can lead to
uncertainty, anxiety and depression and a loss of sense of purpose.
In this light, it is becoming increasingly apparent that it is not just
care that is required but support for how to live well with dementia,
whether in the own home or in residential care. This includes managing
ones own care and every day tasks, as well as leisure activities, social
engagement. Even small things such as whether and when to go out or what
to wear can have important effects on peoples sense of self and
wellbeing, contentment and happiness. Key to this is having choices and
the ability to decide. Acknowledging the agency of people with dementia
and understanding what can be done to support this is therefore a key
question.
Design-based non-pharmacological interventions are increasingly
recognised as having great potential to help. Design can offer novel
ways of complementing care and independent living to empower people with
dementia in everyday situations because of its ubiquitous nature and its
affordances. Much focus has so far been on physical and cognitive tasks
and on safe-keeping and reducing risks. For example, design can help
accomplish physical tasks and offer guidance or reminders, e.g. for time
or orientation, or alert to behavioural changes. While there are some
approaches towards emotional and social aspects of living with dementia,
more could and should be done to focus on enabling people with dementia
and acknowledging their agency.
Design can help to support social, leisure, creative activities. It can
help empower people with dementia offering choices and aiding
decision-making. Design can support the individual person, or change the
environment. This can take the form of a product, of systems or
services, of the built or natural environment. The importance is to use
design to help reduce stigma and exclusion, and instead to improve
well-being and social inclusion to create happiness.
While the aims may be clear, the way to achieve them still raises many
questions about the best approaches, ways and methods to achieve such
aims. This conference therefore seeks to explore the manifold areas and
approaches. This may include novel theoretical approaches, novel methods
in design development or in working with and including end-users, or
novel products, environments, services or systems. Or it may include
novel ways of working, collaboration and co-operation. The key aim is to
bring together and explore how we might impact positively and
sustainably on the personal, social, cultural and economic factors
within our communities to improve living with dementia.
To this end, we welcome a broad engagement with the field and invite
submissions from a diverse range of researchers and practitioners from
the various design and health disciplines, including product and
interior design, craft, information and communication technologies,
architecture and the built environment, psychiatry, psychology,
geriatrics and others who make a relevant to the field.
Themes may include, for example:
- Design approaches for the wellbeing/empowerment/happiness of elderly
people
- Design approaches for the wellbeing/empowerment/happiness of people
with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or dementia
- New design frameworks and approaches for
wellbeing/empowerment/happiness
- Mindful design approaches for wellbeing/empowerment/happiness
- Collaboration between designers, technologists, health professionals
and people with lived experience
- Data collection with and by people with MCI/dementia
- Co-design & co-creation with people with MCI/dementia
- Evaluation of design with people with lived experience
- Evaluation of the impact of design on people with lived experience
CONTRIBUTIONS & SUBMISSION INFORMATION
MinD 2019 welcomes contributions in two formats:
1) Full Papers
We invite the submission of full papers (3000-4000 words) by 1 February
2019. Papers are expected to offer new or challenging views on the
subject, novel approaches, working methods or design interventions or
ideas, or similar.
Papers will be selected subject to a double blind review process by an
international review team. Paper will be reviewed for
relevance/significance, novelty/originality, quality/rigour and clarity.
2) Design-based submissions:
We invite the submission of designs in analogue or digital format,
including e.g. physical artefacts, digital artefacts, films/video.
Contributions are expected to offer new or challenging ideas, novel
approaches, working methods or design interventions, or similar.
Submissions will be exhibited during and as part of the conference.
In the first instance proposals should be submitted by 1 February 2019,
including an image or visualisation and a verbal description of the
design, and a 300 word statement of the underpinning research detailing
its originality, significance and rigour.
Design submissions will be selected subject to a double blind review
process by an international review team. Submissions will be reviewed
for relevance/significance, novelty/originality, and quality.
If selected, submissions are expected to arrive by the organisers by 15
August 2019, free of charge. Insurance is the responsibility of the
author/designer.

All contributions must be submitted by 1 February 2019 at the latest
through the conference submission system, which you can access from the
conference pages.

Publication of conference submissions:
Paper submissions will in the first instance be published as online
proceedings, archived in an open access repository with a DOI number,
and also available as an abstract / programme booklet and memory stick
with the proceedings.
In a second step, paper authors will be invited to submit their extended
papers (6000-8000 words) for inclusion in a journal special issue.
Available journals will be publicised on the conference website as soon
as the are confirmed.
Design submissions will be included in the abstract booklet and
published in an online-based catalogue accompanying the exhibition.

The Academy for Design Innovation Management 2019 London International
Research Conference will be hosted by Loughborough University London.
The ADIM International Research Conference 2019 is organised in
collaboration with members from international partners: Hong Kong
Polytechnic, Politecnico di Milano, the University of Twente, Oslo
Metropolitan University, Macromedia University, Tecnun, The University
of Southampton, Middle East Technical University, Universidade de
Lisboa, RMIT University and Delft University of Technology. The last

Call for Tracks
The Tracks will form the Call for Papers which will be announced in
mid-September. One of the aims of the Tracks is for
the cross-institutional and ideally international track facilitators to
bring together a network of scholars to explore the proposed Track
topics. Proposal should consist of:
- a track session title
- 3 to 5 sub-chairs for the session who together with the chair will
oversee the track
- an outline for the track session to provide context (up to 250 words)
- a brief list of references (around five) to indicate the tracks scope
Track proposals will be reviewed by the programme committee. Successful
track proposals will be publicised on the website as part of the
conference call. The track chairs will become part of the International
Conference Programme Committee and the Tracks co-chairs will be become
part of the International Scientific Review Board.
The general theme Research Perspectives in the era
of Transformations will allow potential Track co-chairs to propose

The international conference-exhibition invites academics involved in
creative-research in design and related disciplines to contribute to the
reflection on the roles played by documentation and invention in
investigating the city and its territory.
The Urban Inventories conference-exhibition examines the crossover
between documentation and invention as they relate to the city. To
document, to represent and to project urban complexity are essential
tasks toward a deeper understanding of urban spatial production at all
scales and ways to generate new meaning for the city. The
design-research projects presented and exhibited are aimed at
reconsidering urban complexity, representational forms of knowledge, and
research in design and related disciplines. These considerations
highlight four central preoccupations of the conference: situated
practice, representation, projection and investigation. How are
documentary practices in design and their modes of representation
generative of new urban knowledge? How and when does the act of making
an inventory become a design project?

About
Atmosphere 11 will explore ADAPTATION. This theme intends to attract
researchers from diverse disciplines into an open but topically oriented
exchange. ADAPTATION is a mutation, a change that aids organisms to
thrive in their environments. ADAPTATION implicates designers as
organisms with the particular places, materials, contingencies and
intentions that enable survival or better living in an increasingly
unpredictable environment. In other words, this symposium will examine
not merely what and how we adapt, but the sites and situations of
adaptation. The aim is to critically and creatively explore how
contextual, cultural and environmental circumstances of our world serve
as meaningful catalysts for design, building, teaching and research
within a discussion of atmosphere and adaptation. This theme encompasses
multifaceted, dynamic scales and terrains including the complexities of
our social fabrics, intricacies of environmental function, potentials of
adaptation as process, as fitness, the materials and patina of our
everyday adaptations, and the stories and arguments that share
understandings of our designed world. Do we engage in pre-ADAPTATION? Do

Whether space, image, text, object or system design is always also
communication. Against the backdrop of increasing radicalization,
segmentation and polemization of social discourses, the relationship
between design and communication seems more volatile today than ever.
New communications media, channels, spaces andWhat are the pioneering
approaches and methods of design research in relation to communication
through and within contemporary forms of expression, as well as cultural
and economic production? How do research projects reflect "Matters of
Communication", i.e. the form and materiality of designed communication,
and their role in the emergence of attributions and interpretation
contexts? What is the role that design research plays in the development
of relevant questions and solutions
Our conference "Matters of Communication" creates a space for discussion
about how communication is designed today and how design is communicated
today.
What are the pioneering approaches and methods of design research in
relation to communication through and within contemporary forms of
expression, as well as cultural and economic production? How do research
projects reflect "Matters of Communication", i.e. the form and
materiality of designed communication, and their role in the emergence
of attributions and interpretation contexts? What is the role that
design research plays in the development of relevant questions and
solutions? Howis theory formation and translation into teaching and
practice carried out? The program consists of lectures, discussions and
workshops in four thematic areas:
Language and Image
The design of communication has always moved between the rather
denotative qualities of the written word and the greater connotative
freedom of the image. Depending on the design concept, visual design
serves to support the flow of communication or can, with an expressive
gesture,break through familiar visual forms of representation. How is
communication in language and image designed, perceived/received and
interpreted today? What are the impact factors influencing the design of
visual communication? What influence does visual communication have on
prevailing social discourses?
Space and Scenery
From non-places to highly utilitarian buildings to narrative spaces of
experience, from physical buildings to augmented hybrid worlds to
virtual reality space is more complex than ever. How do contemporary
spaces function as communication interfaces? How are these spaces
argued, narrated and communicated through their design? What is the role
of the simulation as a specific form of expression in the context of
economic and social issues?
Object and Interaction
Designed objects are a combination of materials,functionand aesthetics,
as well as an interface in complex technological, economic and social
contexts. How is communication designed today between objects and
people, and amongst people through objects? How do these objects
communicate in relation to their position in economic and ecological
cycles? What role does materiality or immateriality play in relation to
the communicative abilities of objects?
Society and System
Complex systems such as computers, companies or societies are based on
the constant exchange of materials, energies, symbols and are therefore
communicative systems per se. How do such systems get designed? How does
design deal with different stakeholders groups in these systems? What
does good communication within a system mean, and how are friction and
conflict used as productive forces? We cordially invite you to submit
contributions in the following formats:
Short lectures (10 minutes)
Lectures should present current practical project examples as well as
discursive approaches that take up practices and methods of design
research in connection with the conference theme and that lie at the
communicative level of design.
Workshops (60 minutes)
Workshops should be an invitation to discuss or carry out a practice
together that relates to the conference themewithactive involvement of
the audience.

All submissions should refer to each one of the four topic areas. Your
abstracts should not exceed 500 words. Please submit as a PDF file to

Submissions deadline: 19.08.2018
The selection is made by the conference committee, together with Dr.
Daniel Hornuff (Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design) and Prof. Katja
Thoring (Anhalt University of Applied Science, Dessau). Accepted
submissions will receive notification no later than 24.09.2018.
Meeting date and location: 16 and 17.11.2018 in Karlsruhe
The host university of the 15th DGTF annual meeting is the Karlsruhe
University of Arts and Design. The conference committee consists of

DRN Drawing Research Conference call for delegates
Practice and Drawing//Diverse Perspectives: examining possibilities for
drawing in practice led research
PGR Drawing Research Conference 11th September 2018
Conveners: TRACEY School Research Members, Loughborough University
The conference aims to create a space for discussion and collaboration
centred on an examination of practice led research where drawing forms a
defining part of research across a diverse range of practices e.g.
painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, installation,
audio-visual, music, text, language, the performative.
We will examine the relationship between drawing practice and drawing
theory,the role of drawing at each stage of research methodology,and the
question of how thought processes and affective response relate to
drawing process in practice.
These areas of enquiry will be addressed by a series of academic papers
delivered during the morning, followed by a panel discussion, and a
series of practical drawing workshops in the afternoon. The conference
offers an opportunity for debate and reflection, encouraging engagement
across a wide range of research practices.
We welcome and encourage participation from a diverse range of delegates
whose engagement with drawing is informed by a variety of experiences
across academic and practice contexts.

27-28 September 2018 - Social Games against Crime Seminar
Call for Participation Social Games against Crime Seminar
On September 27-28, 2018 the social design group at the University of
Southern Denmark is hosting a 2-day seminar focusing on challenges of
implementing and evaluating social design in a prison context. Over the
past 3 years the Social Games Against Crime research project
(http://sacproject.org/) has studied how the design of social games can
help improve relationships between children and their incarcerated
fathers in Danish prisons.
We wish to invite researchers and practitioners from social design,
criminology and studies into family narratives to share experiences and
results and to discuss the challenges and potentials of design research
interventions seeking to enable children to better cope with problems
resulting from parental incarceration.
A number of keynote speakers from both practice and academia will
address questions of implementation and evaluation from different
perspectives ranging from qualitative research in criminology, game
design and social design to small stories research.

Typography Day will be organized for the Twelfth time on 2nd to 4th
March 2019 at IDC School of Design (IDC), Indian Institute of Technology
Bombay (IIT Bombay), Mumbai with support from India Design Association
(InDeAs) and Aksharaya.
Experimental Typography
Introduction:
The theme for this year event is - Experimental Typography The event
will feature a day of workshops on Typography and Calligraphy followed
by two days of conference dedicated to Experimental Typography. The
international conference will be devoted to addressing issues faced by
type designers, type users and type educators. The conference includes
presentations by invited keynote speakers, eminent academicians, blind
juried papers, industry professionals, research scholars and students.
The event will also host an exhibition of selected posters and
typographic works of students and faculty members from Design
Institutes. The event is planned over three days:Day 1: Workshopson

the event - Experimental Typography. As the conference is being held in
Mumbai, we encourage you to include the context of Mumbai in the design
of logo. Calligraphic or digitally created letter forms or existing
fonts, or a combination of these can be used for the logo. The logo
should also include the words Typography Day 2019 or Typo Day 2019.
The resulting logo should be of the size and specification given below.
This competition is open to students. The competition is open to all -

Dementia Lab is an event that aims to bring together researchers,
professionals and people with personal experience of dementia to share
stories and learning on issues related to design and dementia. For
Dementia Lab 2018, as well as broadly exploring the role of design and
the creative arts in relation to dementia, we are specifically focusing
on issues of experience and participation.
We have put together a programme of three invited keynote talks by
Claire Craig (Lab4Living, Sheffield Hallam University), Kate Parkin and
Anne Walton (Creative Age Challenge, Equal Arts) and Hester le Riche and
Hester van Zuthem (Active Cues), four panels with short presentations
from researchers and practitioners talking about their projects, and six
short workshops on topics related to design, creativity and dementia.

sharing, discussion and debate about walking. Our definition of walking
