Short abstract
This panel seeks to investigate the employment of self-enhancement strategies, from a social, psychological, emotional and embodied perspective. Individuals act on the self to work on their resilience, empowerment and self efficacy to construct gender and identity as customized aspects of the self.
Long abstract
Contemporary times are characterized by the “mantra” of self-optimization and people invest more and more resources to enhance themselves. Looking at self-determination, attractiveness and competitiveness as watchwords of contemporary narratives, we invite researchers to submit papers discussing the self-construction through technological, sportive, psychological, emotional and embodied strategies.
The body is a subject and an object of self-manipulation through embodied and emotional devices (plastic surgeries, cosmetic interventions, tattoos, piercings, implants and body suspensions), but flesh is not the only focus of self-creation. Ethnographical data show that thinking positive, self-narrative and mental abilities are raising as well as means to actively mould gender and individual identity. Positive psychology trainings, life coaching courses and group of practices are some examples of self-determination practices.
These interventions demonstrate engagement and dedication on the self as site of investment, where the individual is the main source of authority and its uniqueness is a moral value to pursue.
What strategies are employed to go beyond self-limits? How individuals or groups create contemporary selves? What are the connections between self-creation, gender and identity? How going beyond self limits influence everyday life, personal perception and mental states? What motivations support or hide empowerment strategies? What moral values are linked to the commitment and to the final results? How unsuccessful efforts are managed? What narratives are produced in order to elaborate self-determination?
Understanding the self as a social and cultural project, this panel aims to discuss the employment of self-enhancement strategies, from a social, psychological, emotional and embodied perspective.
