Lead Statisticians, Defra
London, Bristol or York
Salary £46,150 (National), and from £50,750 (inner London)
There has never been a more exciting time to join the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra). Decisions made at Defra affect the whole of the United Kingdom. Responsible for the environment, the countryside and the rural economy, Defra’s diverse teams deal with a vast range of issues that profoundly impact on people’s day-to-day life – from the food we eat and the air we breathe, to the water we drink. Defra’s remit spans everything from the food and farming sectors, to protecting the environment from all manner of natural threats and hazards. Crucially, Defra is also one of the lead departments in delivering a successful exit from the European Union.
You will be working within the community of Defra statisticians who collectively oversee one of the largest portfolios of official and national statistics across government. We provide valued advice to ministers and to senior officials accountable for policy development and delivery across the department’s wide remit.
We currently looking to recruit to two Lead Statistician roles – one in the Animal and Plant Health and Welfare (APHW) Directorate and one in the Chief Scientific Advisors Office (CSAO).
APHW protects UK biosecurity. This team’s EU Exit projects seek to ensure a functioning UK trade system with enhanced protection of UK biosecurity against the significant cost of pest and disease outbreak. They are building on the UK’s global reputation for excellent animal health and welfare to promote exports, and to ensure we maintain public confidence both in the security and integrity of our animal and plant products and in the schemes that we operate.
