Given the state of the leg, I'd seriously recommend getting a specialist in to test the fibres. They look too long to be asbestos, but it was very commonly used is applications like this. If it is asbestos, there's a chance that the whole room that the leg is in will be considered contaminated, with a big bill for remediation.

Hi all,
Please see below an enquiry we’ve had about materials in a prosthetic leg (I don’t think this has already been circulated – apologies to Christopher at Preston if so!). We don’t have anything similar in our collection or any idea what potential materials and hazards it might contain, but hoped someone here might?
Many thanks,
Lowri

Subject: FW: Prosthetic leg enquiry
To whom it may concern,
My name is Christopher Young and I am a collections access assistant at Preston Park Museum and Grounds. We have recently received a prosthetic leg, which we are looking to use in an exhibition that discusses what came after the end of the First World War. When looking over the condition of the leg it had a few areas which were of concern and so we are reaching out to see if there are any museum professionals who could help with clarifying the materials and status of the object. Basically within the lining is a fibrous material and we would like to know whether that or any other the materials such as the paint might be hazardous due to using things such as asbestos. Do you have similar prosthetic legs in your collection and are aware of what was in their material builds?
