Dear all,
After many years using Starlink with different Fedora distributions, I am facing serious trouble in the newest distros. I had found compatibility problems before, because Starlink uses old versions of many libraries, but a combination of compatibility packages and a small amount of cheating (by creating soft links to the newer libraries that were named with the old version) had always worked.
However, starting with Fedora 25, things have stopped working. Most of the packages will still run, but if, for instance, I try running KAPPA ccdsetup, I get
%/usr/local/star-2017A/bin/ccdpack/ccdsetup: /lib64/libpng12.so.0: version `PNG12_0' not found (required by /usr/local/star-2017A/lib/libpgplot_star.so.0)
Fedora 25 comes with libpng16 and creating a soft link /usr/lib64/libpng12.so.0 pointing to /usr/lib64/libpng16.so.0 will not do the job, as it did in previous versions.
The problem becomes worse in Fedora 26 and successive, which come with newer versions of libgfortran and Starlink software cannot even be initialised, complaining that it requires libgfortran version 3. I have tried installing every linux software I have been able to find containing compat-, but none seems to do the trick. I have been told that I could have different versions of the fortran compiler running, but I hit other incompatibilities if I try to do this.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Regards,
-Ignacio
