We are seeking an experienced Interaction Designer and Researcher to join a new EPSRC-funded project investigating the trusted sharing of personal health data for living well with HIV, and the design and evaluation of new supportive tools and services.
INTUIT Project
INTUIT is a 30-month design research project, commencing in October 2018, which aims to identify and address fundamental Trust, Identity, Privacy and Security concerns that people living with HIV have about sharing personal data about their health and lifestyle that they collect themselves. This pioneering and highly interdisciplinary project will investigate how patient-generated data can be shared safely across multiple contexts: between patients and clinicians; between those who live with HIV in the peer community; and with organisations, including businesses. By developing and evaluating prototype data-sharing tools, INTUIT will explore how to prevent the exclusion of people living with HIV from the benefits of digital communities, while at the same time informing healthcare innovation strategies for trusted and secure sharing. In the context of the UK’s ageing population, the research has the potential to inform population health for living and ageing well with long term conditions.
The project forms a collaborative partnership between: Northumbria University and University College London, City, University of London, University of Bristol and University of Edinburgh; and Terrence Higgins Trust, Public Health England, National Aids Trust, Microsoft Research Ltd, Central and North West London NHS Trust, Yoti Ltd, INTEROPen, and UK-CAB – a leading HIV advocacy group, plus a number of academic clinicians and experts in HIV Medicine, Health Informatics and Ethics who will sit on a strategic advisory board.

Description of Duties | The successful applicant will take a leading role in conducting real-world research with study participants to inform an inclusive, human-centred design process of developing and iteratively testing prototype technologies and services. Resultant designs and research outputs will inform new strategic directions for healthcare technology innovation. ‘Research-through-design’ studies will be carried out in collaboration with web developers using Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) architecture.
Qualifications | The applicant must have a PhD (or be close to completing doctoral studies) in Interaction Design or a related Design discipline, or have equivalent professional experience in (e.g. Communication Design or User Experience (UX)). A Bachelors and/or Masters’ degree in Design, or a related discipline, is desirable.
Skills and Experience | The applicant must be imaginative and able to support design development from concept to high-fidelity prototyping and evaluation. Required technical skills include illustration and graphic design, interface design and web programming, photography, motion graphics/ animation and video production. Desirable skills include 3D prototyping.
Strong communication skills, plus experience and interest to work in interdisciplinary teams is essential. The role also requires prior design research experience and an understanding of conducting field studies and of qualitative data collection and analysis. INTUIT may involve working with potentially vulnerable or hard-to-reach research participants, so applicants must demonstrate a sensitivity to this working context and to ethical practice. It is expected that the applicant will have a portfolio of exemplary design projects that demonstrate a keen interest in advancing research-through-design practice. Applications should demonstrate a track record of publishing at leading venues in Design or a related field.
Other Requirements | The applicant must be able to occasionally spend time away visiting project partners for project meetings, running user studies, and attending national and international conferences.
