I agree with Don and would like to riff off this too. In my earlier riff I kept returning to unintended consequences. One of my enduring concerns about contemporary design practice is how little it seems to focus on unintended consequences and what to do about them.
With much of the focus on things such as innovation, creativity, design thinking, user experience, user-centred design, and profits, less and less seems to focus on unintended consequences.
Unintended consequences are unavoidable. They are, if you will, part of the natural order. But we can do a great deal to minimise them and, like doctors, try to do no harm.
I say this on this list because as a field of investigation for would-be PhD’s in design this could be both rewarding and extremely useful. And with my lefty hat on, I find myself thinking about all the wonderful user experiences developed using user centred design that lead people to spend money and to consume things they cannot afford and which do them great harm.
Just a quick riff.
