When I was doing my masters, I included a Kodak grey card and ensured each photograph was printed with the grey card consistent. I then ascribed each soil a Munsell colour from its photograph. I am planning to publish this on academia.edu but electronic scanners have automatic settings that are difficult to turn off.
From memory, Munsell's colour chart comes in book-format, like all the wee cards you get in a paint shop, so you couldn't get the whole set in one photograph. The human eye changes its perception of a colour depending on what is around it (see polarised microscopy), as well as the illumination source (white balance).
There is a handful of electronic 'colorimeters' on the market ... has anyone used one? I found only three, priced £450 to £2.5k, the range perhaps reflecting the difficulty of removing outside influences. There is also a surface whiteness tester but the scarcity of instruments suggests to me they don’t work very well. DP
P.S.> I just remembered I've got an app on my iPad for matching any shade with a proprietary paint colour; mine's Dulux but several of the paint companies do them. Maybe as an industry we should move away from Pantone, and start using 'willow mist' and 'heartache brown' instead (I just made those up, no really)?
