The Department of Medical Statistics has a long-standing research collaboration with the Dementia Research Centre (DRC) at the Institute of Neurology, UCL. The DRC is a world-leading centre for research in the dementias, whose work focuses on identifying and understanding the disease processes that cause dementia, the factors that influence these disease processes, and how best to support people with dementia and their families.
The team of statisticians (currently three) based at LSHTM collaborate on a range of studies in Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. These studies are broad in scope and include both cross-sectional and longitudinal approaches, observational and interventional studies, using a wide variety of techniques including medical imaging, fluid biomarkers, genetics, and neuropsychology. As well as carrying out the statistical analysis of many of these studies, and advising on the analysis of others, the statisticians are frequently involved with the design and conduct of these studies,
The person appointed to the position will play a central role in the research collaboration. Their work will involve close collaboration with the senior research team at the DRC, providing statistical leadership and ensuring that all research receives the appropriate statistical input. They will coordinate the research efforts with the other statisticians, conducting analysis themselves and supervising the work of the other statisticians in the team where appropriate. The appointee will also participate in collaborative bids for external research funding, and also seek funding to develop their own research interests in statistical developments that are of relevance to dementia.
The person appointed requires a PhD in medical statistics or equivalent, a high level of expertise and understanding of statistical and epidemiological methods, an aptitude for innovative methodological and applied research in medical statistics, excellent leadership skills and a track record of effective participation as a statistician in collaborative medical research projects with non-statisticians.
