I’m pretty sure it’s an error generated by the Linux DNS resolver on the VM factory. ie random DNS lookup failures trying to get the IP address of vacmon.gridpp.ac.uk. That's published with a TTL of one day so it’s not that the GridPP DNS servers are overloaded either. The monitoring messages sent to VacMon are UDP packets so (by design) problems at the VacMon end can’t back up to the sites.
