Hi John,
This is a difference between linux and MacOS. To open an HTML file (as well as most other files) from the Mac terminal you want to use the ‘open’ command, so use:
open origdata/slicesdir/index.html
instead of
firefox origdata/slicesdir/index.html &
This will open the HTML file in your default browser.
