CfP: ‘Learning from Small Cities’ 2-day workshop, 1-2 August 2018
Dear all,
We are hosting the launch workshop for our new Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Newton Funded research project entitled ‘Learning from Small Cities: Governing Imagined Futures and the Dynamics of Change in India’s Smart Urban Age’ on 1st August 2018 at King’s College London. We are also hosting a follow-up workshop on ‘Big Data and Urban Governance on the Margins of the City’ as part of a British Academy Research Fellowship awarded to Prof. Sanjay Srivastava (Indian PI on the ESRC project) at King’s College London on 2nd August 2018.
The 2-day workshop aims to focus research on smart cities, urban transformations, big data and urban governance in India and the Global South.
We invite participation applications and presentation proposals from PhD students and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) based in the UK and EU with an interest in these areas from various research and practice disciplines, including urban studies, urban, social, cultural and political geography, technology and ICTs, sociology and geo-informatics. Please consider submitting a participation application or presentation abstract or forward to others who might be interested.
We have limited funds available to support the participation of Early Career Researchers and PhD scholars.

• Urban futures in the Global South
• Urban technological/ICT transformations
• Urban governance in the Global South
• Big Data and Deep data
• Urban ethnography in India/the Global South
The research team includes Dr Ayona Datta, King’s College London (PI), Professor Sanjay Srivastava, Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi (Indian PI), Dr Melissa Butcher, Birkbeck, University of London and Dr Sophie Hadfield-Hill, University of Birmingham (UK Co-Is), Dr Ritajyoti Bandyopadhyay, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Mohali (Indian Co-I) and other members of the advisory board. The workshop will also include separate presentations from the project team to introduce the project and garner feedback.
Confirmed speakers: David Satterthwaite, Jaideep Gupte, Katherine Willis, Robert Cowley, Srilata Sircar, Ursula Rao, Jon Cinnamon, Scott Rogers, Lieven Ameel and Igor Calzada.
Submission
• Applications for workshop participation and abstracts for individual presentations of approximately 10 minutes in length should be 300 words maximum, detailing any relevant research experience and your suitability to participate or present.
• All applications for participation and presentation abstracts must be accompanied by a brief biographical statement (maximum 200 words) and full contact information (name, institution/affiliation, contact email address) and sent by midnight (UK time) on 15th July 2018 to Marta Kochetkova (email).
• Notifications of acceptance will be sent by 20th July 2018.
