Postdoc opportunity – real-time fMRI neurofeedback
The Neurotherapy & Social Cognition / Affective Neuroscience Lab (neuSCAN Lab) is currently accepting applications for postdoctoral researchers.
Our Lab (Heads: Keith Kendrick & Benjamin Becker) is based at the Clinical Hospital of the Chengdu Brain Science Institute at the University of Electronic Science and Technology (UESTC) in Chengdu China. With agreement Professors from Germany (Christian Montag, Ulm University, Germany) & Australia (Adam Guastella, University of Sydney), PhD students from China & Europe & a growing international faculty at the Institute including Bharat Biswal & Pedro Valdes-Sosa our lab is a truly international lab.
Our mission Our overall research vision is to establish which altered neural circuits are primarily responsible for producing symptoms in key psychiatric disorders such as addition, depression, autism and schizophrenia, and to develop novel therapeutic approaches - including novel pharmacological approaches, computer-based training & real-time fMRI/fNIRS based neurofeedback. The strategy we are using to achieve this combines behavioral, neuroimaging, pharmacological and genetic approaches in both healthy subjects as well as in psychiatric patients.
The position In our previous research we showed the functional relevance of real-time fMRI neurofeedback (Yao et al., doi: 10.1016/j.neuroimage.2016.02.035), evaluated a novel connectivity-based fMRI-neurofeedback approach (preprint on biorxiv: https://doi.org/10.1101/308924) & recently established an fNIRS based neurofeedback training. To push these projects to the next level we are looking for a highly motivated postdoc. The projects will be conducted in tight collaboration with Rainer Goebel & Michael Luehrs (Maastricht University; Brain Innovation). Our aims are to facilitate neurofeedback learning success, employ closed-loop approaches to explore prediction error coding and to extend the connectivity training to disorder-relevant circuitries such as the striato-prefrontal circuits. The precise project will be developed together with the successful applicant –providing the applicant with the opportunity to realize own research ideas.
The lab offers an international platform, Lab language is English. Applicants will receive support from our students & technical assistants for implementing the projects (that is Chinese language skills are not necessary ;)
Applicants should have a PhD in Neuroscience, Psychology, biomedical engineering or related fields. Applicants should have strong background in experimental research, neuroimaging (fMRI experience is essential) or computational modelling. The successful applicant will receive strong support with moving to Chengdu and will be integrated in our established Chinese & international collaborations. Applications for Chinese or international funding will receive strong support (including application for international postdoc scholarships, or the Chinese Young Thousand talent program, see e.g. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-00538-z)
The position will be initially contracted for two years, salary will be negotiated with respect to previous experience.
