Fair enough.
”Misuse” is the wrong way of putting. I hope my second email clarified what I mean

A clarification
First of all, my comment (about the article on fashion design) was NOT that
this is a misuse of the word "design."
My comment really is that the word "design" encompasses so many different
activities, that it is probably best to use different terms to denote these
differences. We try today by using adjectives (so the NY Times article
should not have been about "design," it should have been about "Fashion
Design." But adjectives have a way of being dropped, so that is not an
adequate solution.

I do not wish to change the meaning of the word Design: First of all, that
is a hopeless exercise (as many have already observed). Second, it has so
many meanings, that the usage today is misleading, but not inappropriate.
What is the answer? I do not know, which is why I have turned to this list
for advice.

*Some asides*
- D. Busse suggests "Defign," the noun and "defigning," the verb. A
rather interesting suggestion for the Design Research/observational/applied
ethnography part of the design process.
- Once, after a long dinner in Munich, with multiple bottles of wine,
Dieter Rams complained about the misuse of the word "design," scorning the
fact that now there were people who called themselves "hair designers." He
suggested the German word "Gestaltung" (as in "Staatliche Hochschule für
Gestaltung Karlsruhe"). However, Gestaltung translates as "shape" or "form"
and so this is also restrictive.
- I notice that German Universities today tend to use the word "design"
as in:
- Die European School of Design in Frankfurt – Hessens kreativste
Designschule und eine der Top Ten Designausbildungsstätten in Deutschland
– bietet einen exzellenten Design-Studiengang im Fachbereich Visuelle
Kommunikation / Kommunikationsdesign.
- Der Masterstudiengang Industrial Design verfolgt eine
disziplinübergreifende Kooperation mit Lehrstühlen der Fakultäten für
Architektur, Maschinenwesen und Wirtschaftswissenschaften an der
TU München
sowie mit Lehrstühlen der LMU und richtet sich an HochschulabsolventInnen
aus gestaltungsverwandten Disziplinen.
