The next visit arranged by CILIP GIG will be to Manchester's Museum of Science & Industry Library & Archives on Tuesday 10th July 10am-12.
Many of the archive collections at the Museum relate to industrial companies who were at one time either from the Manchester area, or from companies with a presence in the area. The archive collections provide information crucial to understanding the museum’s object collections. The archives also provide information about companies who either manufactured equipment and provided services that have been lost in the mist of time.
Major collections include Beyer, Peacock & Co. Ltd, Gorton, Manchester. Builders of steam locomotives for national and international railway companies. Ferranti Ltd, electrical equipment manufacturing company and involved in developing the first computers built in this country and later built mainframe computers used in universities and by commercial companies, Linotype & Machinery company responsible for the introduction of the type setting machines, in Europe, used by newspaper companies across the globe.
The National Paper Museum Collection as the name suggests contains a wonderful collection of material related to the history and manufacturing of paper from its earliest beginnings, along with samples.
