*Subject: *Search for new Chair of the Board

/Sent on behalf of Dr Helen Pain, Chair of the Board of Trustees/

Good afternoon,

I appreciate that you have been sent a lot of requests over the past weeks regarding opportunities to volunteer with the Science Council, but as you know the Board is looking to appoint a new Chair of the Board in time for the AGM in September. I would appreciate it if you would circulate the below information and attached role description among your networks regarding the vacancy for Chair of the Board.

Kind regards

Helen

*The Science Council*

The Science Council is a charity and membership organisation established under Royal Charter in October 2003 for professional bodies and learned societies across the science disciplines. Its purpose, as defined in its Royal Charter, is to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge of and education in science, pure and applied, for public benefit. It sets the standards for professional registration for practising scientists and science technicians, independent of scientific discipline. Professional bodies within the membership are licensed to award their members the following designations who meet these standards: Chartered Scientist, Chartered Science Teacher, Registered Scientist and Registered Science Technician.

Following the resignation of the Chair in January this year, the Board is seeking to appoint a new *Chair* to lead the Science Council through the next stage of growth and development. The ideal candidate will provide leadership of the Board and working with Member Bodies and other partners to ensure that the Science Council delivers public benefit and its charitable objectives. The Board is currently seeking to appoint an interim General Manager. The Chair will be expected to work closely with the interim General Manager to deliver the new strategy and will be instrumental in the appointment of a permanent CEO, expected in early 2019.

**

*The successful candidate*

The successful individual will be enthusiastic in working with Member Bodies to deliver our new strategy. They will be an experienced board leader, preferably at Chair level, who has worked effectively with a range of stakeholders. They will be highly motivated to use their energy and experience to foster good relationships with our Member Bodies. Ideally a scientist they will have the credibility and strong interpersonal skills necessary to lead the organisation through challenging but exciting times.

**

*Term of office*
The post-holder will initially serve for an initial three-year term with the potential to renew for a further three years.

**

*Time commitment*

  * Between 15 and 20 days per annum.
  * The Board meets at least 4 times a year and Council of Members meets up to 3 times per year. The majority of meetings will be in central London.
  * It is important that the Chair makes time to speak regularly to the interim General Manager and with Board members between meetings.
  * In addition to Board and General Meetings, other contact – usually electronic or by telephone – will be necessary.

**

*Further information*

A role description is attached. Expressions of interest should be made to Dr Helen Pain ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>) by *Friday 30^th June*. For an informal and confidential discussion regarding the role please contact Helenprior to the closing date. This will play no part in the selection process.
