Registration Reminder: Romantic Exchanges, 1760-1840
British Association for Romantic Studies Early Career and Postgraduate Conference
University of Glasgow, 15–16 June 2018
Keynote Speakers:
Professor Gerard Carruthers (University of Glasgow)
Dr Susan Manly (University of St Andrews)
Registration for Romantic Exchanges is now open: https://romanticexchanges2018.wordpress.com/registration/
The conference will explore the nature of exchanges in Romantic-period literature and thought. We will examine the idea of exchange from a range of perspectives; from the economic exchange of objects and commodities, to the personal exchange of letters and emotions, the literary exchange of themes and tropes, and the intellectual exchange of ideas, highlighting neglected connections between writers, texts, and contexts. Although concepts such as originality, seclusion, and the isolated genius remain central to Romanticism, a broader understanding of the role of exchange during the period develops our comprehension of the cultural movement.
In addition to the thirty conference papers, there will be seminars led by early-career researchers, a workshop showcasing the University of Glasgow's Special Collections and a tour of the Hunterian Museum's 'Philosophy Chamber' exhibition, as well as keynote addresses from two of the leading scholars in the field of Romantic studies, Professor Gerard Carruthers of the University of Glasgow and Dr Susan Manly of the University of St Andrews. This jam-packed programme will be rounded off by a wine reception and conference dinner on the Friday evening.
All welcome; we hope to see you there!
Honor Rieley (Glasgow) and Paul Stephens (Oxford), organisers.
