The Department of Medical Statistics in conjunction with the Clinical Trials Unit wishes to appoint a Research Assistant who has an interest in statistical methods with application to clinical trials. This prestigious fellowship is funded by the National Institute for Health Research with a view to increasing capacity in areas of strategic need, such as statistics. This initiative is intended to attract talented individuals who have not previously been exposed to the NIHR or health-related research.
Applications are invited from outstanding candidates who have completed, or are close to completion of, an undergraduate degree with a substantial quantitative skills component, or candidates who already have a postgraduate qualification in a related field. Full funding (fees and salary) for an MSc in Medical Statistics is available in the first year. For candidates who already have an MSc, funding for attendance at additional, relevant MSc modules is available.
The successful candidate will undertake a research project (mostly in year 2) to evaluate methods for conduct and analysis of international clinical trials. Methods will be applied to data from a number of very large randomised trials conducted across diverse geographical regions.
The fellowship award also includes funding for a two-month internship to provide an opportunity for the fellow to design and supervise completion of a short-term project.
The successful applicant requires an aptitude for both applied and methodological research, good communication skills and strong interest in a career in statistical methods applied to clinical trials.
The post is available from 1st October 2018 until 30th September 2020. The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year , pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director’s Day”. Membership of the USS Pension Scheme is available.
