Throughout my career it has always been assumes that only particles that enter the lungs can cause health effects. However, I saw a presentation recently where the speaker was talking about ingested particles. (Sorry about the next bit if you are eating!) . The concern was particles trapped by the mucous but then swallowed. I know this was an issue during the London smogs, particularly for children, but is anyone aware of any evidence that this is still an issue with traffic and/or other pollution?
