1. Overview
UCL Railway Research Group is one of the leading research organisations and conducts unique yet high-impact research for urban railway operations and engineering. The group is working with railway operators, infrastructure managers and policy organisations around the world.
We are pleased to invite you to apply for a 3-year PhD studentship to work on a Network Rail, Transport for London, and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)-funded project that analyses and optimises train service dwell times.
The studentship covers UCL registration fees and provides a stipend of £16,777 per annum tax free (2018-19 rate, the amount may increase according to UCL's guidelines).
The successful applicant is expected to start in September/October 2018 but can start earlier or later than this date.
2. Studentship Description
The studentship involves analysis of train service dwell times and optimisation of passenger boarding. The project involves big data analytics.
The studentship will include placements at partner organisations. This would provide the student with opportunities to not only work on the data held by the partners but also to understand the business operations of railway organisations and build people networks.
3. Person Specification
We are looking for an outstanding candidate who will have obtained a Bachelor's degree at either a first or upper second level, and a Master degree in any of the following disciplines: Computer Science, Transport Engineering, or any other disciplines which involves big data analytics. We do not expect candidates to possess prior railway knowledge, but knowledge and experience in data and associated statistical analysis would be appreciated.
