The Rabinovici Lab at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center is looking to hire a full-time research assistant in summer 2018. This is an ideal job for recent college graduates (especially those who have 1-2 years of post-graduate or significant undergraduate research experience in dementia, neuroimaging, or both) who are interested in neuroscience and are hoping to pursue higher degrees in research or medicine. Given the technical complexity of the position, a two-year commitment is strongly preferred.
The Rabinovici Lab studies Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases using a variety of cutting-edge imaging techniques (PET, MRI, fMRI, DTI) alongside comprehensive neuropsychological testing. The lab has been at the forefront of research describing the in vivo characteristics of tau and amyloid pathology in Alzheimer’s disease, and has contributed to a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms that underlie clinical variability in dementia.
The core of the job involves performing advanced data processing and analysis, collaborating on projects with medical fellows and postdoctoral scholars, and preparing materials for presentations, papers, or patient meetings. RAs have opportunities to meet patients and to observe the clinical evaluation of dementia. Additionally, previous RAs have designed and carried out their own research projects, which has led to first-authored publications and opportunities to present at major international conferences.
Our lab and clinical center is at the Mission Bay campus of UCSF. The RA will work in a highly collaborative environment at the world’s leading center for dementia research. The lab also works closely with Bill Jagust’s lab at UC Berkeley, and with groups at Harvard, WashU and the Mayo Clinic, among others.
Strong candidates will demonstrate many of the following qualities:
• A motivated interest in learning about neuroscience, dementia, and neuroimaging data analysis
• A background in neuroscience, psychology, cell biology, cognitive science, computer science
• A strong GPA (>3.6)
• Computer programming experience (especially Python, R, or MATLAB), along with experience using Linux environments, Excel, and/or neuroimaging software (e.g. SPM, FreeSurfer)
• Undergraduate or post-graduate research experience, esp. (but not limited to) neuroimaging
• Coursework in neuroanatomy or statistics
As this position will replace a research assistant who is leaving in the summer for graduate school, we are hoping to hire someone who can either begin training full-time in June or who can at least come to UCSF Mission Bay for part-time training a couple of times per week during early summer 2018.
Interested candidates should email Adrienne Visani at [log in to unmask] with Subject Line: UCSF RA Position. Please include an attached resume or CV and a one-page cover letter that addresses your background and skills, interest in this position, and long-term career or educational goals. Please also include your availability in late spring/early summer 2018. We may then request a short, written recommendation from a research supervisor, or applicants can include further contact information for potential references.
