RAS Public Lecture: Why Antimatter matters – 15th May
Pro Tara Shears
Antimatter, an identical, oppositely charged version of normal matter, is one of the most mysterious substances in the Universe. We think it formed half the universe at the time of the Big Bang, however, very little of it survives today. Understanding why so much antimatter disappeared so quickly, to allow our matter-dominated Universe to form, is one of the biggest challenges today in particle physics. In this talk Professor Tara Shears will explain what antimatter is, how it fits into our understanding of particle physics, and why we think it matters so much. She'll describe the experiments at CERN, the European laboratory for particle physics, and on the International Space Station, that we've built to study and understand it better. Finally she'll show you what they've found. You'll see their latest results, so you can judge how close they've come to understanding the nature of this elusive substance.

Star Cluster Formation: Mapping the first few Myrs
On behalf of Local and Scientific Organizing Committees, we are pleased to announce a 2.5-day workshop on the formation and early evolution of star clusters that will be held in Grenoble, 29-31 August 2018. This will provide a forum for the star formation community to discuss the big issues of this field. Combining observation and theory, and with a particular emphasis on results obtained from Gaia DR2, topics will include: initial conditions of stars and gas in stellar cluster formation; spatial and kinematic properties of newly formed/active massive star cluster regions, open clusters and stellar associations; and early dynamical evolution and simulations of massive star cluster regions. We have developed an art and science project called Mind's Eye, in which
audiences travel the Solar System guided by scientists and engineers who
are working on active missions.

We are redesigning the project for the Royal Albert Hall for this coming
May and are looking to bring in some fresh voices describing the active
missions, from The Sun, to Juno, to Voyager - and everything in between.
It would be great to get a range of international voices if possible, and
all we need to do is a short 30min - 1hr interview across Skype - or in
person if not too far from London.
If your day job sends you to the Moon, Mars, Ceres or Jupiter we would love
to hear from you!
Please do send me a message if you want to hear more and possibly become a
voice exciting audiences in what humanity is getting up to across our Solar
System.

Astronomy certificate course
The courses are designed for people with an interest in astronomy who are interested in understanding the many recent results reported in the press by astronomers and physicists. No technical expertise is required, only a basic knowledge of maths (GCSE level is certainly sufficient) and some familiarity with tables and graphs.
The courses will be given as a series of five weekly lectures, presented as a slideshow, with two lecturers going through the slides
together and plenty of opportunity for discussion.
The first two courses will be

The Solar System (July 2018)

Archive news
The RAS Archive holds some of the papers of Augustus De Morgan (1806-1871), an early member of the RAS and the first professor of mathematics at UCL. A free exhibition of the ceramics created by his son, the artist William De Morgan, will be taking place at Guildhall Art Gallery from 11th May to 28th October. Thanks to the generous support of the London Mathematical Society, the RAS will be lending Augustus De Morgan's charmingly illustrated mathematical biographies for display during this exhibition.
