For many, the abortion debate is a choice between religion and reason. Many religious people oppose abortion because they believe that the newone (my term for the fetus/unborn child) is a human being made in the image of God. Whilst many secular people defend the right to abortion because their views are informed by science, and science tells us that the newone becomes independent at a certain stage in pregnancy. This lecture will explore why this way of setting up the debate is deeply problematic and proposes an alternative formulation.
Dr Mumford is the author of "Ethics at the Beginning of Life: A phenomenological approach" published by Oxford University Press
