Indices of Deprivation: May 2018 Update
Dear User,
MHCLG are happy to announce that production has begun on an update to the 2015 Indices of Multiple Deprivation in collaboration with contractors Oxford Consultants for Social Inclusion
. Key personnel from this research team were responsible for developing the conceptual model and methodology for measuring small area deprivation utilised in all the English Indices of Deprivation since 2000.
The indices update is scheduled for publication in summer 2019. The IoD2019 will retain and replicate the model of multiple deprivation used in the IoD2015, utilising the same data inputs and approach as closely as possible, rather than developing a new methodology. Key reasons for this include:
· Results of previous user engagement exercises have highlighted that users value a consistent and comparable methodology and data within the indices suite of outputs – we are working to provide this with the IoD2019.
· The current roll out of Universal Credit presents challenges for producing a nationally consistent measure of deprivation. Producing the IoD2019 to current timescales will allow some of the main data impacts on the current indices methodology to be mitigated or bypassed.
· Indices outputs are widely used to target resources, inform policy and strategy and to support the commissioning of local public services. Having the IoD2019 available in summer 2019 will provide timely data to feed into these planning initiatives as early as possible.
· Preparing the IoD2019 for summer 2019 publication will maintain the general indices publication timetable over the last 20 years and may allow for the harmonisation of production timetables and update publications across the UK’s devolved nations in 2019.
We will be keeping users updated throughout the production process.
