Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research fellow to work on the modelling and statistical inference of chromosome self-organisation during cell division. The project will develop and implement Bayesian algorithms to fit (infer) 3D mechanics inspired models to tracked chromosome trajectories generated from high-resolution experimental imaging time-series data (generated from human cells). The models are stochastic differential equations incorporating multiple ‘movement states’ (a hidden Markov model, HMM); the number of states is unknown so a hierarchical Dirichlet process will be used. The aim is to achieve through data driven model development an unprecedented level of understanding of chromosome organisation in cell division, and thus an understanding of how it goes wrong in diseases such as cancer. The project is a collaboration between Burroughs’ theory group and an experimental lab in the Warwick Medical School.
The ideal candidate will have a relevant PhD, e.g. in statistics/mathematics/physics/machine learning, and have a strong background in stochastic modelling and/or computational statistics, e.g. Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), particle filters/sequential Monte Carlo. A background in HMM inference using MCMC algorithms will be beneficial, whilst an ability to programme in MATLAB, C++ an advantage. A background in biology is not required.
