We are looking for an exceptional PhD student to work on large climatic
datasets and develop spatiotemporal models for functional data. The PhD
project will be developed in the frame of the doctorate program in
ENGINEERING and APPLIED SCIENCES – TRACK on APPLIED MATHEMATICS and
STATISTICS
LOCATION: School of Engineering, University of Bergamo, Italy (www.uibg.it)
DEADLINE for APPLICATION: June 7, 2018.
DURATION: Three years studentship, starting October 1st.
HOW TO APPLY:

PROJECT COORDINATOR: [log in to unmask]
PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The PhD candidate will work in a team
on statistical modelling for atmospheric profiles of atmospheric Essential
Climatic Variables ECV (including temperature and humidity) obtained by
radiosoundings which are particularly relevant as they may produce
high-quality in-situ data from ground level up to 35’000m.
In this context, the ECV observations are atmospheric profiles repeated in
time and space (4D). In particular, the data can be at a high vertical
resolution, sparsely and irregularly distributed in geographic space
(non-Euclidean) and regularly distributed over time (days). This calls for
statistical models capable of handling spatial and temporal correlation
among objects which are functions. Moreover, heteroscedasticity arises
naturally as measurement uncertainties often depend on local factors. Hence
statistical modelling will aim at heteroskedastic spatiotemporal kriging
for functional data. Moreover, trend and change detection will have
particular importance.
The PhD candidate will contribute to teamwork, including but not limited to
the following topics: gap assessment of ground-based monitoring networks
w.r.t. Geographic space, time and regions of the atmosphere based on the
uncertainty of heteroskedastic spatiotemporal functional kriging;
harmonisation of heterogeneous climatic time series; statistical assessment
of instrument changes.
