We vary the length of time for data capture depending on the device. For devices within the hospital, where there is a fairly controlled environment, we put loggers out for 24 hours and then switch them to a different location. By using 4 or 5 loggers we can cover all locations in a reasonable amount of time.
For devices which go out into the community / outreach clinics we tend to leave a logger there for around week.
The loggers aren't cheap and neither is the calibrations, as you mention.
Previously we shared loggers with Transfusion, but when we increased our frequency of temperature logging, availability of the loggers became an issue, so we purchased some specifically for POCT.
Best wishes
Sarah

That's really good info Sarah. How many loggers do you deploy i.e. do you need to rotate them regularly. I recall our last set of loggers cost us over £1k for around 12 plus the software to capture the data.

Hi,
Whilst performing temperature audits with an infra-red thermometer may enable rapid spot checks to be carried out of the environment where POCT is performed / reagents are stored, where portable devices are involved, this type of spot check has a high chance of missing temperature breaches.
We place our continuous temperature loggers in the glucose meter cases, in order to best detect the temperatures the meter is exposed to over a prolonged period. Using this technique we have identified unusual temperature patterns e.g. when a meter case was left next to a radiator overnight. Similarly we can pop these loggers in the bags of meters which go out into the community and may be exposed to extreme temperatures if left in cars etc overnight / at weekends.
Kind Regards
Sarah

Hi Mary
Good to hear from you. Sorry for the delay - been a bit busy.
1)Do you have to allow it to equilibrate in an area? No, the gun is ready to use on switching on 2)How frequently do you check areas which you find to be compliant? Currently once annually but we recognise that needs to be more frequent even if the risk is low. I would like to do this quarterly, but resources have to be targeted so it's based on the higher risk areas that see large swings in temperatures.
3)Do you have the details of the supplier and could you give me a rough estimate of cost? CASON CA380 infra red Thermometer -32 to 380C, cost was less than £100 4)Are there any other costs apart from the calibration cost? None, you may need to get it recalibrated, or depending on cost of that calibration just buy another one!

Hi
We use an infra-red thermometer gun as part of our audit programme. Point it at any flat surface for a reading. This is done in 3 areas of the site, usually the patient area, where stock is stored and the sluice. The values are checked against the extremes of the manufacturer's consumable operating temperature ranges. The gun is calibrated to UKAS standard. What you need to think about with this approach (obviously not continuous monitoring) is how often to audit and which sites are usually at risk of breaching the operational temperature range.
Some consumables are 25C and others 32C at the high end. Some areas will be prone to higher temperatures or wide temperature fluctuations throughout the seasons of the year. Ideally a risk assessment would establish the areas that would have more intensive monitoring. You need to justify what schedule has been adopted and also what actions would be taken if the monitoring picked an unacceptable deviation.

Hi,
Could anyone recommend a min and max temperature monitoring strip we could use for Point of Care devices on the ward.
Cheers
