Together with my colleague Norman Aselmeyer from Florence, we are planning a special issue that looks critically on colonial master plans. Our special issue titled "Beyond Master Plans: Realities of Town Planning in Colonial Contexts" is planned to get published with Itinerario (Cambridge University Press) in spring 2020. The aim of the issue is to question the narrative of paper written "master plans" of European architects, the modernizing discourse behind it and rather examine what actually happened on the ground (lettered city vs. messy urbanism). Currently, we are looking for an additional contribution on town planning in the Portuguese Empire, preferably Brazil.
Anyone who might be interested in these questions and a publication should contact Daniela or Norman.
Best regards,
Daniela Hettstedt
