Hallo all,
I am getting interested in the production of John Gould's books (Birds of Australia, etc.)
While I know about the various engravers, lithographers and artists, from Edward Lear to Wolfgang Hullmandel at al, I have not been able to find out much about the colouring (watercolouring) procedure, although for some reason I have a picture in my head of lines of young ladies painting as piecework.
Can anyone point me at some research on the production methods involved in these books? I'd also be interested to know how the parts were advertised - I'm seeing very little in (for example) the Times Digital Archive - and how often they came out.
Thanks and best wishes,
Jane Wickenden
