PathFinders' Access to Justice Programme is seeking a committed and highly motivated Legal Case Officer to work in social justice and human rights. PathFinders is an NGO based in HK assisting vulnerable migrant women and their HK-born children.

Applications invited for an Access to Justice Legal Case Officer

PathFinders’ Access to Justice (A2J) Programme is seeking a committed and highly-motivated Access to Justice Legal Case Officer to work in social justice and human rights.
This is a full-time, paid position.

WHO DOES PATHFINDERS HELP?
PathFinders serves pregnant, migrant women in distress and their Hong Kong-born children. Most of the women are current or former foreign domestic workers. Around 80% of the children were conceived in Hong Kong. Despite legal protections, these women are still too often fired unlawfully when pregnant. Once fired, they become homeless and penniless. Stuck in extreme poverty. Destitute. Without any support. And they are pregnant. They and their babies are among the most vulnerable and underserved people in Hong Kong. No one else serves this population.

ABOUT THE A2J PROGRAMME
The A2J Programme, alongside Social Work, Access to Health and Education & Community Outreach is one of PathFinders’ four core programmes. A2J provides legal access and support to clients, many of whom have had their employment unlawfully terminated once their pregnancy is announced or discovered. Our cases are complex, typically involving employment, discrimination, immigration, asylum, family, criminal and child law as well as policy considerations. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Support clients to understand their rights and obligations as well as help them pursue or defend legal claims;
2. Assist with management of legal cases (prepare case notes, refer clients to and attend meeting with lawyers, accompany clients to attend appointments with Government Departments); 
3. Research topical case and policy issues as they arise;
4. Research and prepare legal memoranda, legal case histories and studies;
5. Research and prepare information and education materials; and
6. Where required, support law and policy improvements through community engagement as well as liaise with and prepare submissions to the UN, government, consulates, the legal community and other NGOs.

TERMS OF WORK
1. Duration: initial one-year contract;
2. Weekly hours: full-time (40 hours per week), although there may be some flexibility on number of hours; and
3. Remuneration: salary range HK$15,000-18,000 per month, depending upon experience.

QUALIFICATIONS
1. Graduate degree in law, political science, international relations, public administration or related fields. Preference will be given to applicants who have studied Hong Kong law;
2. Have a demonstrated interest in social justice and human rights;
3. Be fluent in written and spoken English and ideally Cantonese. Knowledge of Bahasa Indonesian and/or Tagalog would be an advantage;
4. Be a good team communicator and player, a quick learner who is able to work under pressure and in a dynamic environment;
5. Be comfortable with, and committed to, operating within PathFinders’ core values: non-judgmental, respectful, passionate, courageous, empathetic, discreet, collaborative.
