3-Year Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Social Science of Animal Research, School of Geography and the Environment, Oxford
We are seeking a Research Associate to work on a 3 year Wellcome Trust programme on The Animal Research Nexus: Changing Constitutions of Science, Health and Welfare. For further details on the programme see https://www.animalresearchnexus.org
The successful candidate will contribute to a 3-year project exploring the ethical, regulatory and social challenges faced those conducting animal research (specifically research covered by the Animals (Scientific Procedures Act of 1986) at Places Other than Licenced Establishments or POLES. Joining a leading interdisciplinary team working on the social, cultural and ethical dimensions of animal research, the postholder will be responsible for carrying out a programme of qualitative research. They will undertake interviews and ethnographic work exploring the implications of new spaces (specifically POLES) within the animal research nexus, contribute to qualitative data analysis, research publications and dissemination; and take part in integrative activities with the wider programme of work on ‘The Animal Research Nexus’.
Applicants must possess a relevant PhD or have a PhD submitted (at the time of interview) in the social sciences or humanities, and be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge of qualitative research methods and an in-depth understanding of different theoretical approaches that can be used to examine the social and ethical dimensions of animal research.
The appointment will be available for 36 months from 1 June 2018.
