TNA has no examples of landing cards (although there is a closed file about their use). However examples appear on the passenger list for the Blommersdijk which arrived in London in March 1947 (also on Ancestry). Data on them include full name, date and place of birth, nationality, occupation and passport number (although this would not have been completed unless the applicant arrived after the introduction of the British Nationality Act in late 1948). I am sure the Empire Windrush generation would have completed similar cards. As there would have been hundreds of thousands of such cards, you can see why they have been destroyed.

I don't have access to Ancestry, so if you can and can indicate any likely differences in the information between the cards and the passenger lists that would be very helpful. I think the Guardian may well be interested in publicising the resource - and effectively £9.99 for pay as you go shouldn't be beyond most of those interested in accessing the records - including the Home Office!

I would welcome some clarity in the press coverage of what the departmental records transfer process from the Home Office should entail, and to what extent this is able to be met in practice –the success rate probably differs from department to department much like other large organisations.

I can't be the only member of this list surprised at the spurious use of data protection legislation to justify the destruction of what would surely have been a valuable historical record.
