Dear Sharon,
I wonder whether they are Cornus sanguinea fruits. Your first picture shows slight ribbing under the epidermis while in the third picture, the right hand item could be a stone divided along the septum.
They are not Piper or Coriandrum.
Best wishes,
Mark

Subject: Peppercorns?
Good morning all. Does anyone have an idea of what these are? They are from the kitchen of a Roman Villa but are in v poor condition. They are not dense enough to be legumes but as most of the exterior has been burnt away there is little in the way of identifiable characteristics.Pic 3 is of the interiors and 1 and 2 are exterior shots.
It has been suggested that they may be peppercorns but I have no good images of charred ones to compare with.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Sharon
