************************************************************************
An exciting opportunity has become available at the University of Verona for a fully funded PhD in Nutritional Epidemiology and Respiratory Research. The four-year studentship will enable the successful candidate to develop skills on epidemiology, biostatistics, population-based studies, and public health nutrition.
The PhD curriculum will be comprised of taught lectures, seminars, and research. For the latter, the candidate will work within the Burden of Lung Disease (BOLD) study, a multi-national survey aimed at describing the distribution of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in low and middle income countries. This area is becoming increasingly relevant, because it might enable to understand the main causes of this disease in the different regions of the world and could spread a major light on its aetiology. Moreover, the importance of diet in the development of respiratory diseases is a new promising object of study: the data on different dietary styles of the participating countries might help to clarify the role of diet in COPD.
Please see here http://www.boldstudy.org/ for further information on the BOLD study.
The PhD studentship is aimed at strengthening and promoting international academic and research collaborations. The candidate will be jointly supervised by academics at the University of Verona (Italy) and at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (USA). The studentship includes funding for short stays as Visiting Scholar at Johns Hopkins and at Imperial College London (UK)
The broad aims of the PhD include, but are not limited to:
· Identifying dietary determinants of poor lung function and COPD in low- and middle- income countries
· Developing, evaluating and modelling different approaches to describe the association of diet with lung disease in the context of other environmental factors (e.g. poverty, indoor pollution, sanitisation)
Prospective students are encouraged to contact Prof. M.Elisabetta Zanolin (mailto:[log in to unmask]) or Dr Vanessa Garcia-Larsen ([log in to unmask]) for further details.
PhD students will be registered with the University of Verona and will carry out their research at the Department of Diagnostics and Public Health at the University.
The studentships will commence in October 2018. This is a four-year position for someone with a Masters degree, or equivalent training, in an appropriate scientific discipline (biostatistics, medical statistics, biology, biotechnologies, epidemiology, bioinformatics and so on). We provide diverse training opportunities for all aspects of research, and for transferable academic and generic skills. The academic requirement for entry is a first or upper second class undergraduate degree or equivalent.
The full stipend of the scholarship (including university fees and a salary) will be paid to the successful candidate, regardless of their country of origin (i.e. there will be no restrictions in the funding for Non-EAA nationals) Please see here http://sites.centri.univr.it/invite/the-call/employment-conditions/ for the economic and employment conditions.
To apply, please visit the University’s website http://sites.centri.univr.it/invite/the-call/documents/. You should upload a full CV, two academic references, and a cover letter detailing: i) your reasons to pursue a PhD, ii) an outline of your research interests and how these align with those of this PhD studentship. Applications missing any of these components will not be considered.
