Subject: Re: HER outputs
In case it's a useful contribution to the 'round-tripping' issue, can I reminisce for a moment about my first job with the then National Archaeological Record?
That was a mainly manual system when I started in the late 2nd millennium. The 'return trip' part of round-tripping - getting data into the record on either new sites or amendments to sites was split into two steps:-
1) Reference recording which just created a very simple note that a source was relevant. (these were recorded on 'minicards' filed by parish)
2) Detailed recording which updated the monument record with all the relevant sources, re-phasing, re-indexing and dividing the monument record as necessary.
Would it be useful for gazetteer type projects to create that step 1 reference record? Just enough that an HER monument record could be automatically updated with a link to the source / gazetteer? e.g. HER Monument identifier plus bibliographic reference for existing sites. New sites could provide fuller details (MIDAS-XML style, or a simpler format).
That seems like a specific and achievable objective... any thoughts?
