I have helped with poster design in the past on a one-to-one basis. For me there are 2 different aspects: 1. How to design an effective poster; 2. How to use PowerPoint to implement the design. From your email I wasn't sure if you were asking about one or the other of these or whether you were including both.
There are several websites that cover the design element. I like http://hsp.berkeley.edu/sites/default/files/ScientificPosters.pdf as I think it makes some good points and is very thorough.
There are some useful hints and tips on using PowerPoint 2010 in the following https://weblearn.ox.ac.uk/access/content/group/e05e05d2-f4ce-4a24-a008-031832bd1509/LearningRes_Open/Course_Book_Ppt_TIUD_Conference_Posters10.pdf .
For PowerPoint 2007 I find this helpful as it also has some examples http://www.2015apsursi.org/PosterGuidelines.pdf

Subject: Conference Posters
Hello,
A user has asked for help turning a PowerPoint presentation into a conference poster. There's quite a bit online, but seems to be of varying quality. I just wondered whether anyone has anything that they would recommend and I also whether anyone provides their users with help/training with this, and if so what form does it take?
Thanks people,
Jennie
