Children and Young People’s Social Policy Journeys: Mobilities, Services, (In)Accessibilities
Wednesday 9th May, 10am-4pm
Department of Social Policy, Sociology and Criminology, University of Birmingham
Confirmed Keynote Speaker: Dr John Barker
This SPA supported one day conference will bring together interdisciplinary research on children and young people’s local service access and its treatment. We invite proposals for papers that explore children and young people’s journeys, mobilities and travel in relation to diverse spaces of contemporary social policy, including healthcare, social care, child protection, education, employment, welfare, asylum, housing, youth work, participation, and the justice system.
In so doing, we hope to develop interdisciplinary debates about journeys and (in)accessibilities as socially reproductive (Cresswell 2010) and central to experiences of policy and practice, as is evident in the diverse, unequal experiences of children and young people’s access to essential local services. We interpret the conference theme broadly, while particularly welcoming papers in the following areas:
• Children and young people’s travel and accessibility challenges when engaging with services
• Journeys as key components of engagement with service delivery in diverse sectors
• Service delivery opportunities within young people’s journeys (e.g. during lift provision, walking or travel to/within spaces of service-delivery)
• The treatment of non-attendance in policy and/or practice
• The reproduction of social inequalities through journey problems and their treatment
Submit your abstract
Please submit abstracts of 200-300 words to [log in to unmask] by Friday 13th April. We welcome all submissions and would also encourage postgraduates and those in early career to participate. In order to continue the discussions of the day, we hope to use this event as an opportunity to explore different strategic activities including the identification of areas for future research, the development of a research network, and the exploration of dissemination opportunities, including a themed journal section.
