We seek a qualified candidate to work on a 2-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) between University of Kent and Eurostar Limited involving the development and application of simulation and optimisation techniques to tackle operational challenges and support Eurostar's long-term strategic aims. Eurostar is the only high-speed train operator directly linking the UK to France and Belgium via the Channel Tunnel. Thousands of passengers travel on Eurostar routes between London and Paris, Brussels, Lille, Calais, and Disneyland® Paris each year.
The successful applicant will be based at Eurostar headquarters in London and will work closely with Eurostar managers and a team of academics in the Management Science Group at Kent Business School. This is an exciting opportunity to work at a high-level position on putting cutting-edge analytics techniques into practice at a dynamic, publically visible, and economically important UK company.
The KTP Associate will be tasked with modelling passenger flows through stations and optimising train departure and maintenance schedules. Successful delivery of the project will help to identify bottlenecks, inform capital investment decisions, reduce congestion and delays, increase passenger throughput, and drive significant future revenue growth.
Applicants should ideally hold a PhD in operational research, management science, business analytics, or a close allied discipline. Strong applicants with an MSc (with Distinction) will also be considered. The Associate must have an in-depth knowledge of simulation and optimisation modelling techniques, as well as a good understanding of data analysis and statistics. Good English communication skills, both oral and written, are essential. Computer programming skills (in C/C++, Java, or similar), previous consultancy experience, a track record of publishing in academic journals, and proficiency in French are all highly desirable.
