PRESS RELEASE:
For the next Digital U-Hang online exhibition, Art Gene is pleased to have artist Benjamin Grosser present his online work Textbook. The artwork, titled Textbook, is a browser extension that removes all images and video previews from the Facebook website. In the artist’s own words, “Whether it’s a linked article preview photo, a friend’s profile selfie, or a “love” reaction icon, every image is hidden from view.”
The result is a radically changed online space—free from the typical visual bombardment of images—and it is through this effect that a user’s experience suddenly comes to a halt. Whereas before an individual could scroll through their news feed while absorbing information from the posted images at a rapid pace, now, with the images hidden, each user is left with nothing but text to read. No longer is each bit of text aided by the added context of the visual aids. It then becomes apparent that through this effect we can peer through the veil of marketing and other influence strategies employed, and as a user you can begin asking yourself questions such as… would I have clicked on this post or have just scrolled passed it? Can I now spot fake news? How are images on Facebook affecting what I “like” and where I click? Textbook will enable the Art Gene audience to traverse Facebook while testing their own questions, to see the site without the images and thus experience its content in a new way.
Textbook has been selected by Alejandro Ball, who recently exhibited with us as part of PILproject, and whom we have invited to be guest curator for the 2018 Digital U programme (being developed at time of writing).
Please Note: This artwork is fully controllable by the audience member (user), giving them the ability to activate or deactivate this browser application when they choose. As well, this application is fully uninstallable.
