Dear Gary,

We've scrapped our fines policy. We used to hand our customers over to our finance department who would recoup the replacement cost of the book from the customers salary. This was as last resort, only if they didn't respond to the numerous emails, and letters posted to their home address. We also telephoned customers ensuring we've covered all avenues before handing over to the finance department. We later found out the finance dept was sending customers to the small claims court. Since then we longer send customers to finance. We endeavour to get the book back but take no monies in this regard.

We do charge for printing within the library, 5p a page for black & white and 20p a page for colour. Customers are more mindful when printing and therefore less paper is wasted. Sometimes they think it's ridiculous for us to be charging and they print in the wards.

Subject: Ruby on Rails

Dear all

We run a database system internally, based on the programming language Ruby. Unfortunately the developer can no longer support us with the project and I wonder if anybody has any experience in this programming language that may be able to help us? The role is on a paid ad hoc basis, ideal for a freelance programmer who would like some extra income. Ideally the person will be familiar with the Ruby on Rails platform. If you have any questions or want an informal chat about the project, please contact [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> or call 020 3317 3497.

Thank you!

Best regards

Marco

Subject: loaning music playing equipment

Hi

We are currently investigating loaning out music equipment to our staff who work on the wards and also in the community.

The idea is to allow staff to play downloaded music e.g. meditation or potentially anything to service users.

We already have ipads but staff however would prefer a device that doesn't require Wi-Fi coverage and can be attached via Bluetooth to a speaker.

I would love to hear from any services who already have this type of equipment for loan and understand how you have got round the downloading/purchasing of music onto the device(s).

And what devices have you opted for...

Thankyou

Hi Kal,

One way of getting round the downloading/purchasing of music onto the devices might be a Spotify Premium subscription for the library: although it's £10 a month, you can download playlists onto up to three devices (at last check). You need wi-fi to download the playlists before use, but once they're on the profile you can play them offline. The only issue is that you need a device that runs either the desktop version or the app, but that would work on iPads and any iOS or Android devices.

CILIP Health Libraries Group Conference 2018

13-15 June 2018, Keele University – Programme now available

We are very excited to share the programme for the CILIP Health Libraries Group Conference 2018. Always a programme at the forefront of current thinking, many delegates remark each year that they learn more best practice in two days at the conference than they do in a whole year behind their desks.

Please click here<https://c.ymcdn.com/sites/www.cilip.org.uk/resource/group/12a7a632-bba2-4306-9f70-df0047d097d7/Annual_Conference/new_events/CILIP_Health_Libraries_Group.pdf> to view the full line-up.

And with just one week left before the early bird discount runs out (20% off before 16th March) there is no better time to register for the conference. Remember, even if you need a Purchase Order, register first to obtain your invoice and add the PO number later.

Click here to register.<https://www.cilip.org.uk/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1002573&group=200697>

The exhibition hall has already sold out but we still have a few spaces available in an overflow area, at a discounted price because of their reduced visibility. Please contact our event manager Carol Stevenson at Novus Marketing and Event Management, on [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> to discuss your requirements.

You can follow #HLG2018 for updates on Twitter from either @NovusMEM or @CILIPHLG. For further information about the conference, please view the registration website here<https://www.cilip.org.uk/events/EventDetails.aspx?id=1002573&group=200697>.

Dear all,

We have been looking at our fines recently and wondering if we should consider scrapping them. As an adjunct to that we were wondering what else do other NHS libraries charge for?

We don't charge for printing or copying, or ILLs.

So as a purely unscientific straw poll, we would like to know what you charge for in your library. Fines? Copying? ILLs? Anything else?

Many thanks

Hi Gary,

What's the rationale for having fines in the first place? Is it just because public libraries do it and is there any evidence it works for you?

Re. charges, I've never understood why we expect staff to pay out of their own money for information that's needed for their job.

Scrap 'em all! Remove the barriers!

Mike

Subject: Library charges

Many thanks

Gary
