This course will be led by Ash Charlton, who has offered a number of successful courses to SALCTG over the past several years.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. Ability to sustain strong feelings of self-confidence and resilience.
2. Understanding your responses to change and stress, and how to cope.
3. Feeling confident about expressing your feelings, and accessing support for them.
4. Creating and maintaining a sustainable work/life/healthy lifestyle
COURSE METHODS:
The day starts with a review of stress: what stops us achieving our goals, in order to ‘ground’ the day’s work in a realistic assessment of the situation. This is done via an enjoyable ‘I hate it when…’ exercise, which is debriefed to extract challenges which will be used throughout the day as examples. This leads to the first topic of the day – stress and change. Participants identify which type of stress is currently affected, and cognitive restructuring techniques are then devised, using a fun ‘neutral story’ exercise. These techniques are sorted into three main categories and applied to the identified stressors.
After the break, we look at long-term stress caused by negative self-beliefs. These are brainstormed, categorised, and then participants share coping strategies via a lighthearted ‘wandering’ exercise. These strategies are debriefed and added to, to give a full spectrum of methods for overcoming self-negativity. The session ends with a positive: how to use visualisation to maintain motivation and positivity.
After lunch we tackle support, beginning with an enjoyable ‘competition’ about the worst way to express negative feelings. Having established this, we then extract good methods and apply the model to expressing positive feelings in order to create a good life and work environment. This is then taken further: once the feeling has been identified and expressed, what are the sources of support. We look at five sources of support, how to access them and get the best out of them. Participants create personal action plans to ‘ground’ these.
In the final session confidence, mostly in the form of developing defences against confidence-sapping negative self-beliefs. These are idea stormed and grouped, then the group comes up with arguments against them in an enjoyable ‘wandering’ exercise which is then debriefed, with key techniques extracted. Following this we look at ways of building confidence, either generally, or with regard to a specific project, using positive language in a case study exercise.
Finally, we look at maintaining good lifestyle habits for health and stress, starting with diagnosing when you need more than just help or advice, going on to look at methods to redefine the problem. This leads to group work on habit change – establishing sustainable habits that will continue when motivation and willpower fail. Groups will work on three main topics, health, goal-achievement and removing destructive factors, using the Zahariades ‘habit-building’ method. When this is established, participants apply the principles to themselves in an action planning session.
