Leicester International Pathway College, in collaboration with De Montfort University and Oxford International Education Group is seeking to appoint an External Examiner for their International Year Zero Engineering and Computing, International First Year Engineering and Computing and International Incorporated Masters in Engineering. The appointment period for this post is initially four years and will commence September 2018.
The International Year Zero (IYZ) is a Level 3 qualification, and offers international students the opportunity to undertake an extra year of study before progressing to Year one of an undergraduate degree within their integrated international bachelors at DMU. The course modules facilitate the International students to not only learn the basics of their chosen subject but also to improve their English Language and Study skills. The IYZ Engineering and Computing covers subject specific content including: Mathematics, Engineering Sciences, Problem Solving and Programming, Creative Technology, E-Commerce Computing, and Computer Skills and research.
The International First Year (IFY) delivered at the LIPC is the first Year of an integrated bachelor’s degree. Upon completion, students will progress to the second year of a DMU faculty delivered programme. The IFY offers the students the chance to improve their Academic English as well as studying course-specific material. The IFY Engineering and Computing covers Engineering Design and Manufacture utilising CAE, Electrical and Electronic principles, Mechanical Principals, Database Management, Information Systems Development and Visual Web Development.
The International Incorporated Masters is a post-graduate pathway and offers support to international students during their post graduate studies through the delivery of a Pre-Masters stage at LIPC. After studying either one or two terms at the Pre-Masters stage with LIPC, Students then complete a 12 month Masters within a DMU Faculty. The IIM offers students to the chance to familiarise themselves with UK Graduate Study and improve their Academic English as well as studying subject-specific content. The Subject specific modules consist of Systems Integration and an Individual Project.
Appointees are responsible for overseeing a number of modules associated with the programmes, and are required to moderate a sample of scripts relating to each module and report on these to the module leader. The provision of an annual report to the University would also be expected as well as attendance at multiple Assessment Boards.
All External Examiners require:
• Knowledge and understanding of UK sector agreed reference points for the maintenance of academic standards and assurance and enhancement of quality.
• Competence and experience in the field covered by the programme of study, or parts thereof.
• Relevant academic qualifications/professional qualifications to at least the level of the qualification being externally examined, and/or extensive practitioner experience where appropriate.
• Academic and teaching experience at the level at which assessment is taking place including competence and experience relating to designing and operating a variety of assessment tasks appropriate to the subject and operating assessment procedures (either externally or internally). External examiners from outside the higher education system,1 for example, from industry or the professions, may be appointed where appropriate; but each board shall have at least one external examiner who has recent examining experience at the relevant level and who is familiar with the standards required for comparable programmes.
• Sufficient standing, credibility and breadth of experience within the discipline to be able to command the respect of academic peers and, where appropriate, professional peers.
• Familiarity with the standard to be expected of students to achieve the award that is to be assessed.
• Fluency in English, and where programmes are delivered and assessed in languages other than English, fluency in the relevant language(s) (unless other secure arrangements are in place to ensure that external examiners are provided with the information to make their judgements).
• Met the applicable criteria set out by professional, statutory or regulatory bodies.
• Awareness of current developments in the design and delivery of relevant curricula.
• Competence and experience relating to the enhancement of the student learning experience.
