Records Specialist - Prize Papers:
About us:
At The National Archives we are always seeking ways to improve access to the 11 million items we hold within our collections. One such way is to improve access to our records, so that researchers of all backgrounds can find records of interest more easily.
This role is focussed on the High Court of Admiralty's Prize Papers collection, which comprises court process for approximately 35,000 ships, with related exhibits predominantly of the period 1655-1815, including many thousands of ship's papers and mail in transit, as well as ephemera and some artefacts (seeds, keys, opiates, silhouettes, etc.). The papers represent communications between women, men and children, families, friends, and business partners across the globe, from maritime conflicts including the American Revolutionary wars, French Revolutionary wars and Napoleonic wars.
About the role:
Improving access to our collections is a key part of what we do at The National Archives, as we seek to improve research experiences for our visitors. In doing so, we can achieve our aim of making people think differently about archives, and the value they have across society. You will play a key role in untapping the research potential of the Prize Papers through the identification, sorting, and cataloguing work on the early modern and 19th century records of the High Court of Admiralty and related courts. You will support high profile research and digitisation projects undertaken by TNA and partner academic organisations into the Prize Papers.
About you:
You will have an eye for detail and an ability to work both individually and as a part of a team. You will develop a deep knowledge of, and promote understanding of and access to, these records and will share this knowledge and expertise internally and externally. You will have demonstrable knowledge of the requisite palaeographical, historical, archival and European language skills: (See full job description below for details. Fluency is not required in all the relevant languages; the successful candidate will be able to identify and extract key data from informal and variable material in different languages). You will have an active research profile and demonstrable credibility in the academic and research sectors relating to the specialist field.
