Solving the Reproducibility Crisis
Nicole Janz
Department of Sociology
Abstract: Reproducibility is held as the gold standard for scientific research. The legitimacy of any published work depends on the question: can we access the data, replicate the analysis and come to the same results? In many cases, the answer is no. In Political Science, Economics, Psychology and many other fields, scandals involving fabricated data have stirred a debate that calls for fundamental changes in the way research is done. This talk will discuss how universities, journals, funders and researchers can nurture a reproducibility culture to ensure that the gold standard of reliable, credible and valid research is upheld.
Speaker: Dr Nicole Janz is an Assistant Professor at the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham. Her research interests include human rights, foreign direct investment, corruption and slavery. Dr Janz is involved in a number of initiatives to promote research transparency. She is an ambassador at the Center for Open Science (CFO) and a catalyst at the Berkeley Initiative for Transparency in the Social Sciences (BITSS). Before working at Nottingham, Dr Janz taught statistics for social scientists at the Social Sciences Research Methods Centre, University of Cambridge. She completed her PhD in Politics and International Studies at the Department of Politics and International Studies at Cambridge. Dr Janz blogs about reproducibility at http://politicalsciencereplication.wordpress.com and tweets @polscireplicate.
Directions: A map of the college is at https://www.downing-conferences-cambridge.co.uk/information/college-map/. Postdoctoral Research Fellow
Are you interested in applying your statistical and/or mathematical training to medicine? Would you like to be involved in a prestigious methodology grant on a clinical trial design to evaluate complex interventions in institutional settings? Would you like to work within a highly successful, 'impressive and inspirational' clinical trials unit, joining a team of over 30 statisticians?
You will work on the MRC Methodology Research Programme funded project: "Open-cohort designs for cluster-randomised trials in institutional settings". This programme of statistical research is bolted on to a cluster-randomised trial (DCM-EPIC) evaluating the effectiveness/cost-effectiveness of a quality improvement intervention, directed at staff in care homes, to enable person-centred care for people with dementia and their carers. It aims to develop novel statistical methods to design and analyse clinical trials and consists of 5 work packages: i) literature review, ii) user engagement, iii) statistical development, iv) statistical evaluation and v) practical guidance.
You will be responsible for performing a literature review, proposing statistical models, comparing methods for handling missing data, exploring methods for incorporating length of stay, developing sample size formulae, a simulation study and contributing to practical guidance and research outputs. Specialist methodological expertise will be provided by the Principal Investigator, Dr Rebecca Walwyn (Leeds), Co-Investigators, Dr Andrew Copas (UCL), Professor Amanda Farrin (Leeds) and Professor Claire Surr (Leeds). There will be an opportunity to undertake further specific training in the post. In addition, you may make a small contribution to the teaching programme, providing specialist advice to medical statisticians in the Clinical Trials Research Unit.
You will have a PhD, or equivalent qualification/experience, in statistics or a related discipline. Additionally, you will have experience of medical statistics and conducting literature reviews and simulation studies.

Subject: COURSE: Prognosis Research: Concepts, Methods and Clinical Application International Summer School, 25th - 27th June 2018, Keele University, UK
Event: INTERNATIONAL SUMMER COURSE IN PROGNOSIS RESEARCH: CONCEPTS, METHODS AND CLINICAL APPLICATION
*Date:* 25th – 27th June 2018
*Location:* Keele University, Keele, Staffordshire, United Kingdom
*Cost:* The course fee will be £795 when registering on or before 31st March 2018 (including meals and 2 nights’ accommodation), and £895 from 1st April 2018.
*More information and registration: **https://www.keele.ac.uk/mrcprognosis/
<https://www.keele.ac.uk/mrcprognosis/>*
As increasing numbers of people worldwide live with one or more health problems, the study of prognosis has never been more important. Prognosis research provides information crucial to understanding, explaining and predicting future clinical outcomes in people with existing disease or health conditions. It provides pivotal evidence to inform outcome prediction, clinical decision making, design and evaluation of stratified medicine (stratified care), and all stages of translational research from molecular biology to health policy.
This 3-day summer school is designed to introduce the key components and uses of prognosis research to health professionals and researchers,
including:
- a framework of four different prognosis research questions: overall
prognosis, prognostic factors, prognostic models, and stratified medicine
- key principles of study design and methods
- interpretation of statistical results about prognosis
- the use of prognosis research evidence at multiple stages on the
translational pathway toward improving patient outcome
- the limitations of current prognosis research, and how the field can
be improved
The course consists of lectures from a core faculty of epidemiologists, statisticians and clinical researchers, alongside group work and discussion sessions. *Please note that no computer practicals are included with the focus instead on interpretation of statistical concepts and results of analyses*. Basic knowledge of epidemiology and statistics is assumed. The course is founded on the prognosis research framework introduced by the PROGRESS partnership, described in a series of 4 articles published in BMJ/PLoS Medicine in February 2013. The PROGnosis RESearch Strategy partnership is a collaboration led by Keele University (Richard Riley, Peter Croft, Danielle van der Windt), UCL (Harry Hemingway, Aroon Hingorani), London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (Pablo Perel, Ian Roberts), Bart’s Heart Centre (Adam Timmis) and the University of Oxford (Douglas Altman).
The course is hosted by the Keele Centre for Prognosis Research and will take place on the rural campus of Keele University. The course fee will be
£795 when registering on or before 31st March 2018 (including meals and 2 nights’ accommodation), and £895 from 1st April 2018. To book a place on the course please click <http://estore.keele.ac.uk/conferences-and-events/faculty-of-medicine-and-health-sciences/primary-care-health-services/course>

Subject: JOB: postdoc fellowship for 2018 start
The Biometrika Trust offers a 2 or 3 year research fellowship, for junior researchers in statistical theory or methodology (despite the name of the Trust, the research does not have to be biostatistical). It is aimed at those among the most outstanding recent PhD graduates who are capable of self-direction.
The fellowship offers an annual salary on the scale £33,518-£37,551 (plus London weighting if appropriate), research support costs of £4000 (2 years) or £5000 (3 years), and up to £5000 funding for a 'career development event' to be devised and organised by the Fellow. Applications should be made by the (potential) Fellow, who should have identified and sought the support of a suitable UK host department.
There are no nationality or citizenship restrictions, but the fellowship must be hosted in UK universities or suitable public-sector research institutions and it will be the responsibility of the host department to get UKVI approval, if relevant, once any award is made.
Any host department is not expected to supervise or direct the research, but must provide a stimulating and inclusive research environment, and each Fellow’s career development should be supported through mentoring.
