Workshop Invitation
Ethical dialogues for developing socially responsible robots for children with autism
Thursday 3 and Friday 4th May 2018 Civil Court Room Leicester Business School
De Montfort University Leicester
Autism is a clinically classified disorder of social-communication and shapes the development of self, and interaction with others and the environment. According to the Centers for Control and Disease Prevention (2014) autism prevalence is found 1 in 68 children. Autism is often co-existent with other conditions such as physical disabilities, anxiety or learning difficulties. There is huge pressure on families to get the best support for their children as early intervention is crucial to help supporting children with autism.
The development of robots to help children with autism develop social skills has grown into a significant area of research over the last two decades. Robotic interventions in autistic children’s care also account for significant European Commission funding in robotics. Some researchers in robotics propose robots can make better therapeutic interventions than human therapists. However, the use of robots for autism therapy and the assumptions made by psychology researchers raises ethical issues.
This workshop is organized by the ethics team from the European funded DREAM Project (Development of Robot-Enhanced therapy for children with AutisM spectrum disorders) and aims to bring together different stakeholders to discuss the ethics of new robotic technologies for children with autism with the purpose of creating a socially responsible robotics.
In this workshop we propose to introduce new and varied voices into the development of robots for children with autism, and invite different stakeholders to discuss how autism is framed, the history of autism, and the consequences for developing ethically responsible robotics. We aim to encourage a dialogue between specialists in robotics, psychologists, psychiatrists, adults with autism, parents and carers, and policy makers to explore the making of ethical robots for autism.
