Primary Research Group Inc. has published the International Survey of Research University Leadership, View of the Effectiveness of the University Tutoring Program, ISBN 978-157440-492-0
The report presents the views on the university tutoring program from 249 deans, chancellors, department chairmen, distinguished professors, and administrative department heads from major research universities in the USA, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Survey participants rate their programs, indicate their support for more or less spending on it, and suggest means of improvement. They also give their views on just how important the tutoring program is to the overall success of the university, and pinpoint student.
Just a few of the report’s many finding are that:
Canadian survey participants were less likely than others to feel that their tutoring programs were good or excellent. Only a bit more than 18% thought their programs merited one of these descriptions.
One interesting finding is strong support for spending more on tutoring from the university funding guardians working in university business and finance offices, 35% supported spending more on tutoring, the highest percentage of any occupational group in the sample.
In general, for many incoming students, basic math education is viewed as weak, creating impediments in many fields, discouraging entrance in to these fields and reducing the pool of viable candidates, as well as creating retention-oriented problems later on.
Data in the report is broken out by a broad range of criteria including: age, gender, academic title, and compensation level of respondent, and university ranking, public/private status and country of origin of the respondents affiliated institution. The sample is comprised of deans, provosts, chancellors, trustees, vice presidents, upper level administration directors, academic department heads, and distinguished professors.
