We are happy to announce that the fifth edition of the international Genetic Improvement Workshop will take place this year with the annual Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference, GECCO 2018, Kyoto, 15-19 July 2018.
Submission deadline: Tuesday 27 March 2018 (hard deadline)
Submission details below.
Disclaimer: being an interdisciplinary event, two GI workshops will take place in 2018, i.e. the fourth edition as GI@ICSE and the fifth edition as [log in to unmask] Both are independent events of the same series.
Key Dates
• Paper submission deadline: 27 March 2018
• Notification of accepted papers: 10 April 2018
• Camera ready copies: 24 April 2018
Call For Papers
We invite submissions that discuss recent developments in all areas of research on, and applications of, Genetic Improvement.
GI is the premier workshop in the field and provides an opportunity for researchers interested in automated program repair and software optimisation to disseminate their work, exchange ideas and discover new research directions.
Topics of interest include both the theory and practice of Genetic Improvement. Applications include, but are not limited to, using GI to:
• repair bugs
• improve efficiency
• decrease memory consumption
• decrease energy consumption
• explore tradeoffs between non-functional properties
• transplant new functionality
• optimise software parameters
• improve practice (e.g., deployments, case studies, etc.)
• inform language or tool design
...and also the any works in the greater field of search-based software engineering in general
Research, Tool & Position Papers
We invite submissions of three types of paper:
• Research papers: up to 8 pages long
• Tool demo papers: up to 4 pages long
• Position papers: up to 2 pages long
We encourage authors to submit early and in-progress work. The workshop emphasises interaction and discussion.
Papers should be in ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) format. Papers must be anonymised.
All accepted papers will be presented at GI@GECCO-2018 and will be published by the ACM. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the workshop (authors of multiple GI@GECCO-2018 papers need only register once).
The official publication date of the workshop proceedings is the date the proceedings are made available in the ACM Library. Based on our experience, this is close to the first day of GECCO itself. The official publication date affects the deadline for any patent filings related to published work.
Diversity Student Travel Awards
Markus Wagner will award two student travel awards to underrepresented graduate students for GI@GECCO 2018. The award will be exemption from the student registration fee.
Eligibility Requirements
• Applicants must be enrolled in a related PhD or Master's programme.
• Applicants from groups underrepresented in computer science will be considered with higher priorities: this include gender, ethnicity, and disabilities.
• Applicants must attend GI@GECCO 2018. It is **not** required that applicants present their papers at GI@GECCO 2018.
Application Process
To be considered for a travel award, please submit the following material via email to [log in to unmask] by 17 April 2018.
• Applicant's full name, address, affiliation, and contact details.
• An academic vita or résumé.
• A short description (in the email body) describing your research and how you would benefit from attending GI@GECCO 2018.
Notification
Successful applicants will be notified by Markus Wagner through email. Once notified, the recipients should confiem whether they accept the award within a week.
WORKSHOP PAPER SUBMISSION
Workshop papers must be submitted using the GECCO submission system this year. After login, you need to select the “Workshop Paper” submission form. In the form, you must select our workshop.
To see a sample of the "Workshop Paper" submission form go to GECCO's submission site https://ssl.linklings.net/conferences/gecco/ and chose "Sample Submission Forms".
Submitted papers are required to be in compliance with the GECCO 2018 Call for Papers Preparation Instructions http://gecco-2018.sigevo.org/index.html/Papers+Submission+Instructions
All accepted papers will be presented at the corresponding workshop and appear in the GECCO Conference Companion Proceedings.
Workshop Format
In addition to presentations of papers, we will also include the following:
- Keynote by Prof John Clark, Sheffield University, https://scholar.google.co.uk/citations?hl=en&user=xu3n6owAAAAJ, providing an overview on bleeding edge technology and to initiate discussions.
- Tool demonstrations are welcome, when they are the subject of an accepted paper.
- We will moderate a free-form discussion at the end of the GI workshop to discuss current challenges and next steps, and also to provide a networking opportunity.
The workshop will be open to all GECCO attendees.
