Subject: FW: Idea for AAG Caribbean specialty group
Dear Pat,
Could you please send out the two emails below to the Caribbean Forum and perhaps the Society for Caribbean Studies list too?
I think it would be an excellent idea and have already indicated my support – I’m an AAG member and so can be part of voting to get it set up.
Many thanks
Tracey
PS Have just noticed it has already been sent to you too…

Dear Dr. Skelton,
I am passing along this email to invite your input on the possibility of getting a Caribbean Geography Specialty Group going.I think the kind of conversation we are trying to have are not unrelated to your reflections on 'The im/possibilities of Caribbean area studies'. Please feel free to share with folks you suspect might be interested.

Subject: Idea for AAG Caribbean specialty group
Dear all,
Starting at the last AAG meeting, Alex Moulton, Kevon Rhiney, Jeff Popke and I have been talking about the need for a Caribbean Specialty Group for the AAG. Almost every other major region in the world has a specialty group. And while the Latin America Specialty Group is often welcoming to Caribbean scholars, there are important differences between the regions.
We see many benefits to having a Caribbean Specialty Group, including creating greater awareness among ourselves and others of the Caribbean researcher community, through a listserv and sponsoring AAG sessions; and supporting student article writing and fieldwork through awards.
The process of creating a specialty group can be long and time-consuming. For this reason, we wanted to reach out to you to see what kind of wider interest there is in the idea. Do you see a benefit in creating a Caribbean Specialty Group? Would you be interested in being part of this discussion moving forward?
If there is sufficient interest, we could use the AAG session “The Caribbean after Irma and Maria: Climate, History, Responsibility” as an event to organize around. We could meet as a group some time that day (along with anyone else interested). And we could make an announcement at this session so that those in the audience who are interested can get in touch with us. In addition, I’d be happy to organize a Caribbean happy hour during the AAG as another way to get our wider community together. Because an important step in creating a specialty group is to establish a certain amount of support among AAG members, we could also use these events to collect email addresses.
Please let us know of any ideas you have about this, and if you’d like to be involved in any way.
Best,
Chris and Alex
