Dear ANTHROPOLOGY-MATTERS subscribers,
We invite you to join us for the following event/see attached flyer (apologies for cross-posting):
REFUGEE TEMPORALITIES AND THE ETHNOGRAPHIC METHOD: A PANEL DISCUSSION
Date: Friday, March 9 2018 from 17:00-19:00
Location: UCL Anthropology Student Common Room, 14 Taviton Street, WC1H 0BW
RSVP link: https://goo.gl/UPmrzw
We invite you to join us for a panel discussion (organised by UCL Anthropology doctoral students Tess Altman, Ioanna Manoussaki-Adamopoulou, and Victoria Tecca) between Professor Cathrine Brun (Oxford Brookes University) and Dr Ines Hasselberg (CRIA: Network-Centre for Anthropological Investigation, Lisbon), moderated by Dr Ruth Mandel (UCL Anthropology) and Dr Tatiana Thieme (UCL Geography).
This panel discussion aims to explore the ethnographic method in relation to forced migration studies. What are the strengths and challenges of using ethnography in contexts of forced migration/displacement? Does ethnography have the potential to challenge power structures? What issues of positionality arise in relationships with interlocutors and authorities? Another point of interest is to critically reflect on the research terminology associated with classifying mobility (e.g. forced migrant, client, refugee, asylum seeker); what does the use of these terms in research reproduce and should we as researchers problematise and re-assign new meanings or look at creating new analytical tools? The presenters will discuss these issues in relation to their fieldsites and their theoretical interests on temporality.
The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A and a wine reception.
Thank you,
Victoria Tecca
